John
Kernaghan - Neighbourhood Worker
Job Title: Neighbourhood worker
Employee name: John Kernaghan
Year of Joining: 2003
Brief job description
To care for, support and guide people to live ordinary
lives in their own homes. To encourage people to maintain existing
skills and to develop new skills. To provide a safe and stable
environment where tenants can feel safe and happy.
Why I chose this job
I found that in my last employment, where I was a "team leader"
that the aspect of the job I enjoyed most was working with people.
Teaching new workers, helping colleagues with problems and solving
personnel issues. Working with Streets Ahead is all about people,
people working together, tenants and staff, This was the right job
for me.
What I like about my job
I like many things about my job. I like the variety, although our
days are structured and planned, no two days are ever the same. I
like the rewards you get from seeing someone achieve something for
the first time, from seeing people enjoy the activities we share and
to see real change in terms of self esteem and confidence. I like to
know that my work is appreciated, which it is. I get more job
satisfaction from this job than any other I have done.
Qualifications and training
With Streets ahead I have had employment related training
in physical intervention and moving and handling. There are
opportunities to do SVQ level 2 and 3 and other courses like Food &
Hygiene and First aid. We have also been given a comprehensive
introduction to the values that underpin our work in terms of
respect, dignity and choice which we all take for granted.
